What is Strategic Planning?

strategic planning notes

Strategic planning training is a process that allows you to identify your organization’s goals and the steps you will need to take to achieve them. It is a critical component of any organisation’s success, yet many organisations do not have a clear strategic plan.

Why is it important to develop a company-wide strategic plan

Without a strategic plan, it is difficult to set priorities and allocate resources. Without a clear understanding of your goals, it is also difficult to measure progress and determine whether or not you are on track.

Assess Current Situation

Assessment of the situation for strategic planning

The first step in creating a company-wide strategic plan is to assess the current situation. This includes taking stock of the company’s strengths and weaknesses and its opportunities and threats. Once you understand where the company stands, you can begin to develop a vision for where it should go.

A SWOT analysis is a helpful way to assess a company’s strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats. The analysis can be done for a specific company or product, or it can be done more broadly for an industry or market.

Strengths might include a strong brand, a large customer base, or a well-developed distribution network. Weaknesses could include high debt levels, limited resources, or poor customer service.

Opportunities might include expanding into new markets, developing new products or services, or pursuing mergers and acquisitions. Threats could include competition from new players in the market, changes in technology that make the company’s products obsolete, or stricter regulation from the government.

Develop Goals and Objectives

The second step is to develop goals and objectives. These should be specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound. They should also be aligned with the company’s mission and values.

SMART Goals

A SMART goal is a goal that is Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, and Time-bound.

Specific: Your goal should be focused and clear. Your goal should be something to do in the future – not now.

Measurable: Your goals should have a measurement or metric attached to it, so you know when you are getting closer to your goals. This metric must allow you to track your progress!

Achievable: You want your goals to feel like they are reachable. You don’t want them too hard or you won’t even try! And then they will never get done!

Realistic: The goals that YOU set need to be realistic for YOU. If you are not a morning person, don’t make your goal to wake up at 5 am every day. It’s just not going to happen and it will set you up for failure!

Time-bound: Every goal should have a deadline attached to it. This helps to create a sense of urgency and forces you to take action!

Some people also like to add the “T” for Tangible – meaning that your goal should be able to be seen or felt. This isn’t necessary for every goal, but can be helpful for some people.

Once you have developed goals and objectives, you can begin to create strategies that will help you achieve them.

Develop Action Plans

The third step is to create action plans. These are detailed plans that outline how each goal will be achieved. Each action plan should include specific tasks, deadlines, and responsible parties. By creating action plans, you can ensure that each goal is given the attention it deserves and that everyone in the company knows what needs to be done to achieve it.

Implement the Strategic Plan

The fourth step is to implement the plan. This includes putting the strategies and action plans into place and ensuring that they are followed. This can be a challenge, but it is essential to the success of the company-wide strategic plan. This can be done by conducting regular audits to make sure that everyone is following the plan correctly. If there are any discrepancies, it is important to address them immediately.

Monitor and Adjust the Plan
